Discover two classical 18th century gems this autumn!

Teseo
Handel

ETO' s continues it exploration of Handel operas with a new production of his extraordinary work Teseo

After causing a sensation with his first opera for English audiences - Rinaldo (1711) - Handel was called upon to come up with another epic work filled with magic, battles and beautiful music.  The result was Teseo (1712) - an extraordinary opera that is really more about the formidable enchantress Medea than the minotaur slaying hero.  With dazzling arias and colourful scoring for strings, oboes, recorders, bassons and horns, Teseo is a gripping drama of sorcery and desperate love.

James Conway (Ariodante, Alcina, Tolomeo) directs a cast including famed Handel interpreter and recording star
Derek Lee Ragin and leading British sopranos Jeni Bern and Gail Pearson.

Sung in Italian with English surtitles

Country Matters (L’Infedelta Delusa)
Haydn

Country Matters is a witty English language version of Haydn’s finest opera, L’infedelta delusa, written in 1773 for the court
theatre of Esterhazy. A pacy Regency romp packed with charm and humour, it features some of Haydn’s most colourful music - Think Cold Comfort Farm meets Persuasion, set to a lively, lovely allegro - and there you have Country Matters.

Country Matters will be directed by Liam Steel - artistic director of Stan Won't Dance movement company.

Sung In English
